It's been a horrid start for the Australian teams in the opening round of the Swatch FIVB World Tour in Brazil overnight. Two nights ago the Australian world tour campaign opened with Adrienne Marie and Carla Scott in action. Unfortunately their tilt was short lived with Japanese pair Miwa Asao and Ayumi Kusano giving them a rather embarrassing lesson, 0-2 (6-21, 4-21).
Next cab off the rank was Sam Boehm and Isaac Kappa. Unfortunately the draw pitted them against the Brazilian pairing of José Vieira Neto Franco Jan Ferreira De Souza. Boehm and Kappa were facing a team not only on home soil but also with almost 30 years combined experience on the world tour! Despite a good battle the young Aussies went down 0-2 (17-21, 18-21).
The last of the Australian pairings saw the return of Josh Slack to international competition, with Chris McHugh as his side kick. After taking three sets to eliminate British pair Gregg Weaver and Robin Miedzybrodzki, 2-1 (13-21, 21-13, 16-14), McHugh and Slack required one more victory to reach the main draw. Unfortunately they couldn't match French pair (and No.3 seeds in the qualifier) Fabien Dugrip and Yannick Salvetti, going down 0-2 (15-21, 17-21).
The women's and men's Brasilia event continues over the weekend with the finals to be played on Saturday and Sunday.
